There are several different concrete staining techniques available for professionals and do-it-yourself handymen to use. These techniques help brighten and modernize a concrete floor, wall, or counters. One of the reasons that concrete staining has gained in popularity is that each project will always have some type of difference from subtle to extreme.
When you use any of the concrete staining methods, you are creating translucent shading as opposed to a painted or opaque coloring. This makes the surfaces look much more natural although the varieties in looks and shades are quite remarkable. You can experiment with the stains and techniques in different ways to obtain the results that you find most appealing.
If you sand blast the concrete before applying stain it will provide a better overall look. The sanding removes much of the dark carbonation and highlights the natural patterns in the concrete.
A simple way to vary the look of the concrete stain is to dilute it. Depending on if you would like a darker or lighter look will determine how much to dilute the stain. Another interesting way to get color variations is to add liquid soap into the stain.
These simple concrete staining techniques will create some really unique contrasts.
If you want to create some dynamic color differences you can apply some powder plant fertilizer to certain areas of your floor after the stain is on. You can also toss some corn flakes on top of areas of the concrete after your spray the stain on to intensify the color underneath the flakes.
You can get a tie dye type effect by saturating cloths in different colored stains and putting them on the surface. You can also use strings to create detailed patterns on the wet concrete.
You can get a very interesting effect by dipping leaves of fern fronds into the concrete stain and placing them on the concrete.
A cool effect can be created by spraying a second color of stain to certain areas of the floor. This will accent the look and give you a real natural stone feel.
